South Lawrence Part 2: New Buildings

Finally, some progress!

Part of the joy in purchasing a finished module that has been in the show circuit for some years is being able to refurbish it or make modifications. To be honest, the NMRA SLD is a wonderfully done module, I just wanted to make a few changes and update the faded scenery.

The first thing I did was remove the grain elevator and replace it with a general store. The elevator did not fir the vision for the layout but I still wanted some traffic to the spot. The photo's below of the "General Merchandise" Store are not taken in the "spot" because the spot is not done. I named the store after my good friend and fellow model railroader Bob Moore. The idea was to have a store that had a little bit of everything being served by rail via a small deck to the back of the store.I also used these two stores to show that you do not always need to spend a lot of money to have a nice building. The structure itself is a Life Like kit purchased on sale.  (Here is the link to the product page) I scratch built the deck from scrap wood, the figures are from Preiser, barrels, crate and flats from Life Like and bags and mailbox from my "parts" bin. The signs were free from the internet. All told I am in about $15 on this structure.

This second building now occupies a previously empty lot. I decided there was more than enough traffic spots on the layout and made this a non-rail revenue structure. This was purchased at a train flea market for $1. The porch was smashed off but all the parts were there. I left it the green shade but did some weathering to give a run down look and added signage to turn it into a rooming house by the tracks. The chimney was already attached and did not sit nicely against the building so I added some foliage to camouflage the gap. It is just placed in the spot and more senicing needs to be done.
